Doctoral candidate (PhD student) in software defined ultra dense 5G radio communications

Recently, Ultra-Dense Network (UDN) has been evolved as one of the key enablers of future 5G wireless technologies. Thus with UDN, more users will be served simultaneously by densely deployed small cells in a confined geographical area. Such dense deployment however amplifies the problem of interference, frequent handover and frequent rescheduling of users in mobility case due to reuse of same radio resource after smaller distance. One approach to mitigate these problems is to track the location of the user equipment and proactively assign the radio resources to it without having to do the traditional handover signaling and beam search procedures.

We are now looking for a doctoral candidate to participate our software defined radio team implementing a testbed system for 5G UDN. Based on your interests, you may focus your research on software architecture and implementation aspects, measurements and testing or algorithm development.

Your role and goals
The goal of your work is doctoral thesis. As a doctoral student, you are expected to conduct your studies, do research work and publish papers. We also expect you to participate in the team effort to build demonstrator system and help in project management issues.

Your network and team
You will become a member of Professor Riku Jäntti’s research group and collaborate closely with the software defined radio team lead by Dr. Kalle Ruttik. The team has members from Prof. Riku Jäntti’s and Prof. Olav Tirkkonen’s research groups.

Your experience and ambitions
You have a M.Sc degree in Electrical engineering, Computer Science or in a closely related field. In addition, you have experience in C/C++ programming, solid mathematical skills, and good English language profiency. You are interested in research and want to develop your knowledge and skills further.
Prior knowledge on wireless communication, signal processing methods and RF measurements is considered as merit.
