(Korean Abstract)
최근에 대학에서 교수들의 강의능력을 향상시킬 필요성을 인식하는 추세가 점차로 높아지고 있다. 고등교육에서 교육의 수월성이 요청되는 까닭은 곧 정보화 시대의 국가 경쟁력은 전적으로 대학 졸업생의 능력에 따라 좌우되기 때문이다. 이 논문은 미국에 있는 네 개의 공과대학 - Michigan 대학교, Purdue 대학교, Cornell 대학교, Michigan 공과대학교-에서 교수와 대학원생(교수 희망)을 대상으로 실시되는 공학교욱 프로그램을 검토하고 비교한다. 이들 네 대학교는 학교 유형(사립 또는 공립, 교육중심 - 또는 연구중심)과 학교 규모의 관점에서 다양한 양상을 갖고 잇는 대학이다. 공학교육의 실시목적은 유사하지만, 교육이수 대상자, 교육내용 및 평가지준, 담당교수 선정 등에서 대학마다 차이가 나타난다. 결론으로, 공학교육의 도입을 검토할 때는 반드시 대학교 자체의 특성 내지 대학 발전 방향을 감안해서 공학교육 프로그램을 계획할 것을 제시한다.

(English Abstract)
In recent years more and mroe universities are recognizing the need to provide training in teaching skills to their teaching staff. The demand for teaching excellence at the level of higher education arises because the national competitiveness in the Information Age depends acutely on the abilities of college graduates. This paper describes and compares the programs on teaching for faculty and graduate stude3nts (faculty-to-be) at four engineering schools - University oif Michigan, Purdue University. Cornell University, and Michigan Technological
University. These four schools represent a wide spectrum in terms of the type of institution (private or public, teaching- oir research-oriented and the size of engineering program. The content of the programs are found to be similar. although some variations are found in organization, audience, and emphasis. The major conclusion is that the universities must consider the particulars of the mission of their university and the nature of their student body in desiging a training program for it to be successful.
