현행 우리 나라 공과대학의 교육체계는 1학년 교양교과목 이수와 2~4학년 전공교과목 이수로 분리된 단순계층형 교육체계인데, 이러한 이분법적 체계는 교양교육과 전공교육의 양극으로 치우치게 하기 때문에 그 사이에 광범하게 펼쳐진 스펙트럼상의 다양한 교육내용들을 수용하지 못하며, 따라서 장래에 요구되는 종합법적 능력을 가진 공학도를 양성하는 데에는 부적합하다. 본 논문은 이러한 문제점을 극복하고 미래에 요구되는 창의적이고 상상력이 풍부한 엔지니어들을 배출할 수 있도록 뒷받침 해 줄 새로운 교육 체계로서 파이형 교육체계를 제시한다. 파이형 교육체계는 기존의 인문 사회교양교육과 엔지니어 소양교육을 결합한 기본소양과정과 기존의 기초과학과 전공기초교육에 공학일반교육을 결합한 전공기반과정, 그리고 전공심화과정 등 3개 교육과정으로 구성되고, 이들 중 기본 소양과정과 전공기반과정을 1~3학년에 걸쳐 병행해 제공하고 그 기반위에 전공심화과정을 4학년 과정으로 제공하는 파이자형 구조를 갖는다. 본 논문에선느 이와 같은 파이형 교육체계의 타당성과 장점을 여러 가지 관점에서 논의한다.

(English Abstract)
In this paper, the traditional curriculum model for engineering education, called simple hierarchical model, is critically reviewed and the problems of this curriculum model are discussed. Then a new curriculum model for engineering education is proposed to overcome the problems of simple hierarchical model and to provide an innovative education for engineering students. This new curriculum model for engineering education called pi-structure, consists of the General Attainments Program, the Fundamental Major Program, and the Advanced Major Priogram, with the three components stacked in pi shape where the first two programs are put in parallel and the third program are put on their top. The necessity, feasibility and various benefits of the pi-structured education system are widely discussed in the paper.
